Upholding Principles, Standards, & Convictions

In a world constantly shifting and changing where those who profess to know right from wrong find themselves aligning with ideological and philosophical positions that clearly deviate and are opposed to the Word of God, we must understand that upholding Godly principles, standards, and convictions provides a solid foundation for living a meaningful, victorious and purposeful life that pleases God. These three elements guide our actions, shape our character, and influence our interactions with others. Let's delve into their definitions and explore how the Bible supports and encourages us to uphold them.

Definitions:

1. Principles: Principles are fundamental truths or propositions that serve as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior. They are the core guidelines that influence decisions and actions, providing a consistent framework for living.

2. Standards: Standards are accepted levels of quality or attainment. They are the benchmarks against which we measure our behavior, performance, and outcomes. Standards help ensure that we maintain integrity and excellence in all that we do.

3. Convictions: Convictions are firmly held beliefs or opinions. They are the deeply rooted values and truths that shape our worldview and drive our actions. Convictions often stem from personal experiences, teachings, or faith and provide the inner strength to stand firm in the face of challenges.


Supporting Scriptures:

1. Principles:

  • Proverbs 9:10 (KJV): "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding."

    Acknowledging the Lord at the highest degree of reverence and respect for who He is, opens the heart to receive wisdom, discernment, and knowledge of what is holy and acceptable to God in contrast to that which is unholy, displeasing, opposed to, and rejected by God.

  • Proverbs 4:7 (NIV): "The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding." Wisdom and understanding are foundational principles that guide us in making righteous and prudent decisions.

  • Matthew 7:12 (NIV): "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." The Golden Rule is a principle that encourages us to treat others with kindness and respect, serving as a guiding truth for interpersonal relationships. These are principles we live by. 2. Standards:

  • Philippians 4:8 (NIV): "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." This verse sets a high standard for our thoughts and actions, encouraging us to strive for excellence and purity.

  • Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV): "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Our work and efforts should meet the highest standards, reflecting our commitment to serving God with diligence and integrity. 3. Convictions:

  • Romans 12:2 (NIV): "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." This verse encourages us to hold firm to our convictions, even when societal pressures push us to conform. Our convictions should be rooted in God's will and truth.

  • Romans 1:28 (NKJV) "And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them."

    This verse clearly expresses and reveals the judgment of God towards those who violate His commandments, but also includes the judgment of God upon those who agree with, endorse, and support those who commit such behavior against God.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NIV): "Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." Standing firm in our convictions requires perseverance and dedication, especially in our spiritual and moral endeavors.

The Importance of Upholding Principles, Standards, and Convictions:

Upholding principles, standards, and convictions is crucial for personal integrity, societal well-being, and maintaining a strong faithful relationship with God. When someone deviates from the principles, standards, and convictions their process to uphold, it creates a conflict and casts doubt upon their beliefs and values. Maintaining one's deeply held core values, principles, standards, and convictions does the following:

  • Provide Consistency: They offer a consistent framework for behavior, helping us navigate life's complexities and make choices and decisions with clarity and purpose in alignment without deviating from core values and principles, but rather uphold them.

  • Build Trust: People who uphold their principles and standards are seen as integral, trustworthy, and reliable, fostering stronger relationships and communities.

  • Promote Excellence: High standards drive us to do our best, leading to personal growth and positive contributions to society.

  • Ensure Integrity: Firm convictions keep us grounded, enabling us to stand firm in our beliefs and values, even in the face of opposition. Integral people do research and ensure that what is presented to them is aligned with their values in spite of societal opposition and pressure to betray their beliefs.

In conclusion, upholding principles, standards, and convictions is essential for living a life of integrity and purpose. The Bible provides a wealth of wisdom and guidance to help us stay true to these foundational elements, ensuring that our lives reflect the values and truths that honor God and benefit those around us without wavering.
