21 Day Daniel Fast

Daniel 10:2-3, "In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled."
(Refer to Daniel 1:8-20)

The Bible teaches us that we are a spirit, we have a soul and we live in a body.  The Daniel Fast affects all three parts of us as we enter into a period of time for focused prayer and fasting.

The Body - Certainly our bodies are effected as our diet is changed, for some in very dramatic ways, during the Daniel Fast. Many men and women experience detoxing from caffeine, chemicals and sugar.  The symptoms are most often headaches, leg cramps, fatigue and malaise.  Most people lose weight during the Daniel Fast. And many report healings from diabetes, allergies, arthritis and cancer.

The Soul - Frequently referred to as "the flesh" in the Bible, the soul is also greatly impacted during the Daniel Fast.  The soul is the seat of our emotions, intellect, personality and will. It is in the "soulish realm" where we experience cravings, frustration, anger and even happiness.  During the Daniel Fast, your soul may very well rebel against the dramatic change in your diet.  Experiencing and winning this battle over the flesh is often one of the most powerful lessons of the Daniel Fast.

The Spirit - Our spirit is that born-again part of us that surrenders to God and then abides with the Father and the Son. Our spirit is filled with the Holy Spirit when we yield to Him. During the Daniel Fast, we want to put our spirit in charge of the other two parts of us. When our flesh is acting out with a craving, we take control of it with our spirit (just as a parent takes control of a rebellious child).

During the Daniel Fast eating is like a vegan diet with more restrictions. The only beverage is water. So the primary foods are fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. There are no sweeteners on the fast, and no processed foods or chemicals.  During your Daniel Fast you will have many times when you might want to "stretch the rules" a little bit.  For example, even though the guidelines say we are to drink only water you conclude that herbal teas are vegetables and water is water and therefore you will go ahead and drink herbal teas during the Daniel Fast.  But I want to encourage you to learn a powerful spiritual lesson by asking yourself (examining your heart) the question, "Why do you want the herbal teas?"

My guess is that the answer will be, "Well I just want them.  I can't drink only water.        I have to have something else."  The Daniel Fast teaches us to deny "ourselves" and instead put our spirit in control over our flesh. As you plan your meals and eat your food, keep in mind that the definition of a fast is to deny food for a spiritual purpose.

Fasting is always coupled with a spiritual goal. So during this time of fasting, you will want to focus on prayer, study and meditation, for the specific purpose of repentance and cleansing from our sins, purity and consecration to God, to receive His Divine counsel, intervention and direction in our personal lives, churches and ministries, for salvation of souls, major breakthroughs financially, and for the manifestation of His power and glory in every area of our lives, families, marriages, community and nation; to destroy every yoke and undue every heavy burden in Jesus name!  (Matthew 17:21; Is. 58:1-14; Dan. 8:1-20)

Prayer:  Father God, grant me your grace and strength to give myself wholly unto You in fasting and prayer.  Cleanse my heart from all sin and defilement.  Wash me thoroughly and create a clean heart in me. Let Your Kingdom come and You divine will be done in my life, marriage, family, health, finances, city, nation, and church.  Bless our leaders and those who have authority over us. Give them Your wisdom, divine counsel and direction that we might live in peace and quiet from all destruction, hardship and war.  Father God, sit enthroned over our country and cause Your purposes to prevail in Jesus Christ name.  Amen.

Please share this blog with others on your social network sites.  God is calling His Church to pray and fast, and to seek His face with all of our hearts in this hour.  God bless you.

Special Note:  If you have health issues, please be sure to contact your health professional for advice before committing to any fast including the Daniel Fast.

Three Secrets of Power. (1) PRAYER (2) FASTING (3) GIVING. Fasting is God‘s plan for mankind for renewal of strength, growth & health etc. Fasting is voluntary abstinence from food (and or pleasure etc.) for spiritual purpose. It is renouncing the natural to invoke the supernatural. When you don‘t want a cast away but a lifting up-FAST.

That is good to all believers to answer a call to fasting. In 2004 the Lord led me to fast for 30 days and 30 nights. I only took water. I did not take any juice nor food for the whole 30 days and 30 nights. The experience is in my book titled the POWER OF FASTING AND PRAYER MY 30 DAYS AND 30 NIGHTS EXPERIENCE.

Maunyah Makoni, your love for prayer is wonderful! I was particularly encouraged by the statement that you made about it. "Prayer is an exchange platform where man allows God into the earthly affairs through faith." Truly prayer is an exchange platform that allows God to intervene into earthly affairs by faith. When our faith in God is enjoined with prayer it produces incredible results in the lives of God's people and in the world we live in. Thank you for making such a wonderful contribution to our community blog. God bless you.

Fasting is an important part of believers life. We should not overlook this necessary "tool". The flesh will most definetly fight against us as we seek to gain control of it and place it under the power of the Holy Spirit which resides within us. The benefits far outway anything that we may go through to obtain our spirituals goals. Great blog!

Marsha, thank you so much for sharing your comments on our community blog. Fasting is extremely important to believers, and it is a tremendous tools that God has given to us that produces great results when employed and implemented. The benefits of which far out way the sacrifice that is made in fasting. If you want to change something or overcome a major hurdle in life "fast." If you want to see the enemies devices destroyed and rendered powerless "fast." If you want to see every yoke destroyed and every burden removed "fast." And if you want to see God's Spirit reign over a nation, people, church, etc., "fast." Fasting is the master key to seeing the extraordinary supernatural power of God release into the lives of men. Optimum Blessings!

Bro. DiAngelo, thank you for sharing your comments on our blog this month. You are absolutely correct in sharing on the importance of having faith during the process of fasting and prayer. In fact, the Bible says, "the just shall live by faith." (Romans 1:17) Without faith it is impossible to please God. He that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6) So, to fast and pray without faith is an absolute waste of time. Our faith tells God that we believe that He is real and His word is true. It communicates our support and endorsement of who God is and the words He has spoken to us. This is what causes God to respond when we seek Him by prayer and fasting - Our Faith! God bless you.

Oakley, thank you for sharing your insights with us on the community blog. You mentioned that in prayer and fasting we "lay aside everything and get our minds upon the Lord." This is perhaps one of the most important things that has to take place during the time of fasting and prayer in order to develop and strengthen our relationship with God and see His glory and power revealed in our lives, nations, families, finances, health, etc. God bless you.

Prayer + Fasting = POWER!!! I believe that when God's people began to fast and pray, it shows the Father in Heaven how desperate we are to truly see his will fulfilled in the earth and in our lives! It shows the Father that we mean business! This is the fourth day in our Daniel fast and I'm already seeing God move in my family! God I give you the praise! No matter what my situation may be, I've learned and I'm learning to give over to God in prayer and watch him work it out! I love you Jesus and I love you Apostle Bethtina! God Bless You!

Allen Wilson on Thursday, October 04, 2012 11:04 PM
What we call the "Daniel Fast" may not be a Fast, but more of a change in diet (or lifestyle) from meat and wine to vegetables, fruit, nuts, and water. Daniel felt is necessary not to defile himself with the King's meat and wine. Daniel was part of a group of youths with no blemishs, favored, skillfull in all wisdom, cunning in knowledge, and understand science. Apparently, the type of diet they had in Israel was a contributing factor for them not having blemishs, being skillfull in all wisdom, cunning in knowledge, and understanding science because Daniel asked the prince of the eunuchs not the eat meat and drink wine for ten days but eat pulse(in the KJV) and water. Pulse is a diet of vegetables, fruit, and nuts. At the end of ten days, their appearance or skin was fairer and their body healthier than those who ate meat. Apparently, what they ate was a contributing factor to God giving them knowledge, skill in all learning, and wisdom (along with Daniel's understanding in all visions and dreams). The king found them to be ten time better than all the magicians and astrologers (and/or enchanters). Wow! We can learn much from the children of Israel. What if the typical American diet would change to the "Daniel Diet". Many dis-eases (or diseases)(for example, obesity and ADHD) that are associated with youth may not exist today. In addition, the education problem(s) in the US could be solve because the youth may be much more smarter in school.

Dr. Stanley D. Williams on Friday, October 05, 2012 7:03 PM
The Bible speaks very much about fasting but I want to narrow the scope of my comments down to Daniel. It was during a time of captivity where the residents of Israel were taken into Babylon. The political elite of Babylon were not ignorant so they chose out the best and brightest from the captivity because they knew that this would improve their own system. It was during this time that four young men stood out because of their dedication to the Lord, they made up their minds that they were not going to be defiled by the things of Babylon or as stated in scripture "the kings meat". The most interesting thing about this time of abstinence was the super natural maintenance they received during the fast. Note if you will the following passages: Daniel 1:8-16, "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs. And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king. Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat. Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse." The challenge to the prince of the Eunuchs from Danial was that he give them a period of ten days and if at the end of this period he was not convinced regarding their fast then they would eat. According to scripture at the end of the ten day period they were fairer and fatter then all of those that at the kings meat. This was miraculous because God supernaturally sustained Daniel and His friends. In like respect supernatural things will occur in the life of anyone who pushes away the plate and obeys God in prayer and fasting. If you want stubborn things broken in your life and great blessings from God you have to remember that some things only come out by prayer and fasting. Make a decision today that you will take you life to a new level by abstaining from food, television and whatever God tells you too in order to hear clearer, live better and flow higher. Once again Apostle Bethtina you have found the mind of God, I love you.

Apostle Stanley, thank you so much for sharing your comments with us on this month's community blog. Fasting does release the supernatural power of God into the lives of His people. When we abstain from food and other distractions such as television and give ourselves to fasting and prayer it creates an opening in our hearts for communion with God, and it also causes the believer to excel above the rest as God's people. God bless you.

Fasting is one of the greatest defenses against the enemy and our craving to fulfill fleshly appetites, as well as one of the most powerful ways of obtaining the power to walk and do the supernatural. There is a certain level of anointing that can only be apprehended through fasting and prayer, so when one is called to fast they are in essence being called to go higher in the things of God. Shalom Toiya, you are correct in your comments concerning the purpose behind fasting. God has placed a high calling upon His people, and in order to fulfill it we must seek Him through fasting and prayer. Fasting creates an open door in the realm of the spirit for God's perfect will to be ushered into the earth realm. When we fast we release cause the power, authority and glory of God to be manifested in the lives of people, nations, leadership, churches, families, etc. Nothing in this world can substitute for what fasting does in the lives of God's people. God bless you Toiya. Grace & Peace (Shalom)!!

TRACIE FIELDS on Tuesday, October 09, 2012 9:20 PM
As Toiya mentions fasting with prayer is one of the greatest defenses against the enemy. As we bring our fleshly desires under subjection and are more attentive to the spirit of God in us we are actually able to view things the way God views them. It is challenging but a spiritual necessity in order to lay aside our normal routine and focus on the things of God through prayer and fasting.

Tracie, thank you for sharing your heartfelt comments on our blog this month. Fasting does allow and enable us to focus on the Lord and see things from His perspective. In addition to that there are a whole lot more incredible things that fasting and prayer does and releases in the lives of those who dedicate themselves to it. As you study the subject of fasting and prayer you'll find that answers are provided from the Lord in response to your petitions. (Refer to Daniel 9:3; 20-23) You'll also experience improved health, spiritual direction and guidance, protection from the enemy, abundant spiritual blessing, peace and joy in the spirit, emotional, physical, mental, spiritual and relational restoration. Fasting will loose the bands of wickedness that might be binding your life in any way, and it will free you from heavy burdens and liberate you from oppression. After the fast, you'll find yourself more understanding, more compassionate, and more in tune with God and His purpose for your life. God bless you as you continue to consecrate yourself to seek the face of God through fasting and prayer.

Latresa, it is a joy to hear from you regarding our subject of fasting. I am especially glad to see that it has been a blessing to you. I want to encourage you to be sure to concentrate on the Word of God and prayer during the fast. Meditation upon the word will sharpen and refresh you spiritually. According to Hebrews 4:12-14, the Word of God is so powerful that it can penetrate any obstacle, circumstance or problem in life. It is more powerful than any "two-edged sword" separating the spirit from the soul. As you employ the power of the Word of God and praying during the fast you will sense the presence of God more deeply and enjoy precious fellowship and communion with Him. Be sure worship Him and lavish your love upon the Lord while fasting. It will release His glory and power into your life beyond measure. God bless you.

Great, timely & concise word! Bending the knee isn't always enough to shift our heart in line with God's nor is it enough for God's heart to shift toward us in a more meaningful way until we purposely make more room in our hearts thru humbling ourselves in fasting & prayer. This also includes the appetite we have for talking or over-talking, for as James said "If we cannot control the tongue then our religion is useless, worthless and vain." Isaiah in chapter 58 also warned of the appetite for words, especially angry or hard/hurtful ones while fasting. Plus Proverbs says our words are fruit and those who love using it will have to eat the fruit thereof be it + or -, life or death or even faith or unbelief/doubt. These are areas I have had to deal with and overcome especially during times or seasons of fasting and praying.

JD, your comments to this month's community blog are quite interesting. I truly thought the insight concerning our appetite for words during the fast was so apropos to the nature and heart of what it means to fast. Normally, the emphasis is directed more towards abstinence from food, but how much talking and the kind of speech that is being spoken during the time of fasting and prayer is actually just as important as what we eliminate from our physical diet. In Daniel 1:8, it says, "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself." Matthew 15:11, "Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man." These two Scriptures that I mentioned teach us that not only should we abstain from food during the time of fasting, but we should equally be mindful of what words we speak, because the words that are spoken during the fast can actually be just as defiling and injurious or damaging to our overall goals than eating the wrong thing. JD, thank you for sharing your heart so candidly with us. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. God bless you.

When an individual enters into a God driven fast, they’re literally entering into DIRECT CONTACT with God. This kind of contact is unhindered. When fasting, it’s essential to faithfully meditate on the word of God, as well as, faithfully come before the Father in prayer. This type of connection is untainted by any negativity, whether it is internal or external. God desires to commune with us. This requires us to be renewed and cleansed, taking off everything that’s not like Him. As we live in this world, we have a tendency to collect dust (filth). Through fasting, meditating on the word of God, and praying we’re allowing ourselves to be cleansed from sin. Sin is anything that’s not in God’s will. Sin is anything that’s not in alignment with the Father. It shouldn’t be surprising when the supernatural occurs, as we humble ourselves in fasting, meditating in God’s word, and praying to God. God is supernatural and anyone connected with Him experiences the manifestations of the supernatural. We consume natural food in order to continue living physically, but we must consume the very word of God in order to live wholly. There are so many people consuming natural food, yet they’re dying physically, psychologically, educationally, financially, spiritually, emotionally, etc. Matthew 4:4 states, “But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” It takes more than natural food to survive AND to do the will of God. We need the type of food that never runs out (God’s word). This is how we’re able to progress in the various areas of life. May God continue to bless you beyond measure Apostle Bethtina and may the virtue of God back upon you greatly as you release it onto others.
